PAT Testing Ireland will ensure that all electrical testing is by use of calibrated PAT instrument kept ‘in date’.
These multi function testers will be used variously to conduct:
an insulation resistance test,
an earth protective conductor test (class 1 only),
flash test and load test and verification of earth continuity
An RCD may be used in conjunction with the tester to protect the electrician and others.

Formal Visual Inspection could also include (as a spot check) removal of the plug cover (if non-molded) and checking that:
A correct fuse is being used
The cord grip is holding the sheath of the cable tightly
Wires are tightly attached to correct terminals
No bare wires are visible other than at the terminals
There is no sign of internal damage, overheating, entry of liquid, dust or dirt
